This full length concert video of Jerry Granelli's V16 quartet was shot at Ironworks in Vancouver in October 2008 and released as a bonus DVD in the Vancouver '08 SACD package. We are making it available now in tribute to and in memory of Jerry and one of his most joyful projects. V16 was formed around 2002 and made three SACD recordings for Songlines - this was the last. The members of the band are David Tronzo (electric slide guitar)m Christian Kögel (electric guitar), J. Anthony Granelli (electric bass) and Jerry Granelli (drums).
The pieces performed (mostly separated by commentary by Jerry):
Unnamed (D. Tronzo) - 0:08
Flipper (J.A. Granelli) - 13:30
The Old Neighbourhood (C. Kögel) - 19:56
Wellfare (C. Kögel) - 34:39
Udon Waltz (C. Kögel) - 40:14
Man's Guitar World (improvisation) - 49:16
Brutto Ma Buono (J.A. Granelli) - 53:28
O Bossa, Where Art Thou? (C. Kögel) - 1:01:36
This quote from Chögyam Trungpa (from his book True Perception: The Path of Dharma Art) appears in the SACD package and sums up in one way the spirit of Jerry's music-making: "We no longer regard a work of art as a gimmick or as confirmation. It is simply expression – not even self-expression, just expression. We could safely say that there is such a thing as unconditional expression that does not come from self or other. It manifests out of nowhere, like mushrooms in a meadow, like hailstones, like thundershowers."
This streaming version is necessarily compressed, both picture and sound - the DVD is NTSC, with 24 bit/48K stereo and DTS 5.0 multi-channel sound.
