Real freedom only came thirty years ago, after the wall fell. Since then, Poland has been shaping its national identity, with history being used rather selectively by many.

This episode shows you what happened to the museum director who wanted to show not only the heroic Polish history, but also the dark chapters.

You get to see what happens when an artist tries to remind a town of the fact that before the Second World War it had mainly Jewish inhabitants.

And you will understand how it feels for the relatives of the Polish national hero Witold Pilecki to be used for political purposes.

The VPRO is touring Europe and European history. The series 'In Europe, History caught in the act' picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia.
