Downing Street says it wasn’t trying to “hide” a policy U-turn by announcing it during Christmas week. The government plans to end full inheritance tax relief for farmers in April, but after backlash it has increased the tax-free threshold for farm business assets from £1m to £2.5m (announced Dec 23).
Farmers had warned that many are asset-rich but cash-poor, and could be forced to sell land to pay inheritance tax bills. The Prime Minister’s spokesman said the change followed talks with farmers and shows the government is listening, while still trying to stay financially responsible.
