Today, it is becoming increasingly clear that the ability to sense change and adapt quickly is vital not only for species but for businesses as well.
Words like ‘adapt’ have become basic in the business vocabulary during the pandemic. Only by adapting is how organizations, regardless of size, have survived this uncertain time. For companies to successfully position themselves in this volatile environment, business leaders should prioritize adaptability as a must-have organizational skill. But how can businesses change their perspective in order to quickly adapt and keep the pace of transformation? Here are two ways nature can inspire us.

Learning and development

We all know a butterfly starts its life as a caterpillar. What fewer of us know, however, is that butterflies remember experiences learned as caterpillars. Therefore, when the grandest change – the metamorphosis – occurs in a caterpillar’s life, it doesn’t start its whole life from zero. The newly-became butterfly has built-in positive and negative experiences in its defence system in order to survive, develop, and thrive.

What else could be digital transformation if not the metamorphosis of your business?

At the beginning, every business is “just” a caterpillar. It’s the years and years of learning, developing, and integrating experiences that’ll lead a business on the path of thriving like a butterfly. But before becoming a butterfly, a major shift needs to take place. Letting go of knowledge that was vital for the caterpillar-state but burdensome for the ease of the butterfly is a must. Transformation also means the trimming of excess, outdated methods and systems. Similarly, as a butterfly doesn’t keep its previous form, businesses need to be able to let go of the old.

Using tech to adjust to consumer behaviour

The phenomenon of camouflage explains why lizards are coloured in a certain way. But what is more, lizards choose to sit on rocks that better match their individual colouring. This reduces the risk of being attacked by birds when they sit out in the open.

In this journey, a central focus should be given to the customer’s digital experience, knowing that the pandemic drastically changed the way we interact with brands or services. A proper response is airlines instituting contactless experiences, like baggage drop-off and check-in, to reduce physical contact and maintain social distancing.

Do you see the resemblance? Part of adaptation and evolution takes place due to the need to develop strategies that avoid risky encounters. Be it between a bird and its prey, the lizard, or between a virus and its prey, the human.
