In 1977, Jean‑Bédel Bokassa, the leader of the Central African Republic, declared himself Emperor and held an extravagant coronation that cost around $20–25 million. The ceremony featured imported thrones, luxury cars, and elaborate regalia, despite the country’s GDP per capita being only a few hundred dollars at the time. The cost alone consumed about one third of the national government budget, making it an astonishing display of wealth in one of the world’s poorest nations. This lavish event remains infamous as one of the most excessive state expenditures in African post-colonial history.
