The conventional wisdom on slavery is that it was a morally repugnant practice carried out by white Europeans against Africans, and that it has long since been abolished. How close is this conventional wisdom to the truth?
The author and journalist Martin Plaut, who has just published a book titled “Unbroken Chains”, argues in the book that our understanding of slavery is simplistic, and that significant aspects of the practice are deliberately and conveniently ignored. He compellingly writes that while the Transatlantic slave trade is sufficiently studied and talked about, other forms of slavery are ignored. These include: indigenous slavery, i.e., slavery by Africans against fellow Africans, which still goes on in some parts of Africa, slavery by the Arab world, and slavery by Asia.
He says that there should be a more honest conversation about the subject and that Africans themselves should not be shy about discussing the slavery practised, and still being practised, by their fellow Africans.
