Today I want to talk about customizing top down crochet hat sizing. Below is the way you figure it out! My goal is for you to be able to customize this pattern to whatever size you need by just using the measurements of your head.
1.Get the circumference you need by measuring around the widest part of your head. Subtract 1-2 inches for stretch or ease. If you like it a tighter hat then subtract 2”. If you like it a bit looser just subtract 1”. Or be safe and split the difference at 1.5” Circumference =
2.Here we use some math to figure out how many rows you need to do for the crown of your hat by figuring out the diameter of your head. Take the Circumference and divide by 3.142. Using 1 decimal place, note this measurement for the crown. Crown=
3.Measure from the crown of your head to whatever length you like your hat. If you like it low on your ears, measure to that spot If you like it towards top of your ears, measure to that spot. You get the point. Length=
4.The length of the body of the hat is length minus the width of the band. This is also a subjective number. Just decide how wide you want the band to be and subtract it from the number you have for Length Length minus band =
Here is the formulas above calculated with my head measurements:
Circumference = 22” Circumference Minus Ease = Unstretched Circumference 22”- 1.5” = 20.5”
Unstretched Circumference / 3.142 = Crown 20.5”/ 3.142 = 6.5 Crown = 6.5”
Length = 8” Length - Band = Body length 8” - 1.5” = 6.5” Body = 6.5
