The Govt of Canada promised direct rail service from the mainland to Campbell River then south to Victoria. This promise was made to get BC to join Canada. At the time the USA was courting BC. Shortly after we joined the rail line to Vancouver Island was abandoned. It was only after BC threatened to leave Canada that the compromise of rail from Victoria to Campbell was agreed on. VIA Rail abandoned the island in 2011 complaining about the unsafe tracks and losing too much money. In July 2014, the Island Coridor Foundation had secured the funds from the local, federal, and provincial governments to replace trackage and repair bridges along the line. Service between Victoria and Nanaimo was expected to resume in May 2015, with service between Nanaimo and Courtenay beginning in summer 2015. VIA walked away from the deal saying it would lose too much money. As of July 31st 2024 repairs to the track have not commenced and it looks like train service on Vancouver Island is history.
