In today’s episode of Lest We Forget History, Lillian Cauldwell examines the increasingly conflicted relationship between our current administration and the Second Amendment. The tension is unmistakable. The right to keep and bear arms empowers the individual, and that empowerment naturally challenges the authority of the state. For a president and an administration uncomfortable with criticism or constraint, that challenge becomes politically inconvenient.

This is why we see mixed messaging. One moment, officials speak in favor of self‑defense rights; the next, they question or undermine the very right to keep and bear arms. The public is left trying to interpret contradictory signals.

In December, the president sued Washington, DC over its restrictive gun laws. The capital bans ownership of many semi‑automatic firearms, including the widely owned AR‑15—tens of millions of which are in private hands nationwide. The Second Amendment protects the right of citizens to bear arms, and people want to hear a clear defense of that right. Instead, the administration appears uncertain about what “bearing arms” means in one jurisdiction versus another, or for residents versus visitors.
