A first draft of how to build up a 2D shape, and then produce a 3D shape from it using the rotate_extrude() function.
Using OpenSCAD's "View → Thrown Together" menu option color-codes the representation of the object:
YELLOW represents the inner "fill" of the object.
GREEN represents shapes that are "cut" away from the object.
PINK represents the outer edge of the object.
TIP: When using OpenSCAD, have a web browser at the ready. The [Help] pull-down menu opens web pages, the most handy being the Cheat Sheet found at (for my version):
