I first heard this song in November 1993, at the age of 15. Just a few weeks had passed since Florence, the girl who had briefly illuminated my otherwise dim world, had disappeared from my life. Losing her felt like the sun slipping behind clouds that would never fully part, leaving a quiet, lingering emptiness in my heart.

That emptiness intertwined with the other shadows in my life. I had finally resolved to leave the oppressive grasp of my stepfather and move in with my biological father. Though necessary for my survival, this choice inadvertently pierced my mother’s heart, a wound I never intended to inflict, yet one I could not avoid.
