In this video I (Miss Moonshine) discuss how I independently taught myself Italian. Since I was 19, I taught myself how to speak Thai, Vietnamese, classical Arabic, French, Spanish, German, and have studied Mandarin and Finnish, although unsuccessfully
I forgot to mention in the vid that I used a textbook for grammar as well in the USA before coming and worked through that for a few months. I used various YouTube channels which both teach in a didactic manner but also some are just slow and clear dialogue spoken between two individuals. I’ve also used AI apps specifically LANGUA, which will correct your mistakes and provide suggested corrections to say what you want to say.
Anyway I find the free version of Duolingo fun as a way to start and activate the brain first thing in the morning. But make sure you use your thinking brain to engage with it and not just play it like a game which will do absolutely zero for you it’s good for practicing grammar and sentence structure of vocabulary, but completely useless for dialogue. For dialogue there’s nothing better than the Pimsleur app which has five levels for italian and progresses through each level on building a dialogue. That’s the only way you’re gonna speak. I wear this into my headphones as much as possible and even while here when I’m walking the streets alone. Just be careful of pick pockets and pay attention while you are also speaking out loud what you hear in your ears.
Use the TANDEM app for making friends with common interest in the places I’m going to visit. I make a point to speak with these people in both Italian and the language they want to learn. Express interest in their hobbies and they may invite you to some of their events or clubs or exercise classes. From there you may get invited to small home parties which is a great way to hear italian and try to hang on to the dialogue.
While in Italy take your coffee standing at the bar and see if you can chat up the person next to you.
Use the ITALKI app to meet language tutors some of whom are not professional but decent enough to correct your language errors while you speak in real time. I have found a very good one for only $15 an hour. When I have no other thing to do in a day I’ll schedule a lesson with him.
I also listened to YouTube and podcasts but not while I’m traveling because there’s so much other content to focus on
