Up until very recently, a large proportion of the Irish population had a strong belief in fairies.
In fact, so strong was the belief that people would often use euphemisms such as "the little people" or "the good people" to refer to the fairies, for fear that talking about them might offend them.
Pre-electrification and before universal secondary education, belief in fairies explained natural phenomena.
"The Stolen Child", a poem by WB Yeats is based on a changeling - a fairy left in the place of a human baby stolen by the fairies. In a pre-industrial era, a changeling was used to explain birth defects or children with development delay.
In 1999, a plan for a £100 million motorway in County Clare was amended to avoid having to destroy a hawthorn tree which was believed to be a meeting point for Kerry fairies on their way to fight with the Connacht fairies!

⚠️ I am not a teacher or professor and my knowledge of Irish folklore is just what I have absorbed growing up in Ireland and from my own reading. My pronunciation of some mythological words may (unbeknownst to me) be wrong and I am open to correction. ⚠️
