Today we visited Kanta Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and got hands-on with one of the more meaningful parts of elephant care — making herbal nutrition balls. These are a mix of bananas, rice bran, tamarind, salt, and natural herbs that help elephants with their digestion, energy, and overall health.
Thailand’s rescued elephants often come from hard working backgrounds and have a rough time with their teeth and digestive system. The nutrition balls give them a boost, especially the older elephants who struggle to chew tough food. It was good to learn about what actually goes into caring for these animals properly instead of the typical tourist circus stuff.
In this video we show:
Preparing the herbal nutrition mix
What ingredients the elephants need and why
Feeding time and close-up interaction
The sanctuary environment and how the elephants live
If you’re coming to Chiang Mai and want an elephant experience that’s calmer, slower, and actually educational, this is worth checking out — just make sure you choose experiences that respect the animals and don’t stress them out.
