This video demonstrates tri-modality imaging for robotic surgery, combining visible light, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence, and gamma imaging.
The da Vinci system is equipped with Firefly, an excellent NIR fluorescence camera that enables tumor visualization using ICG. While fluorescence imaging is highly effective for superficial lesions, it is inherently limited in detecting deep-seated tumors, as NIR signals cannot penetrate thick tissue.
In contrast, the gamma camera images shown in this video are provided by MiRI, a robotic gamma imaging system developed by ARALE laboratory. Gamma imaging enables reliable detection of radiotracer-labeled tumors located deep inside tissue. As demonstrated here, gamma signals can be detected through more than 3 cm of tissue, allowing deep lesions to be identified without being missed.
By integrating gamma imaging with optical modalities, MiRI expands the capabilities of robotic surgery and provides complementary information to support more precise and confident tumor localization.
