In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a quilted Boston bag with a zipper, using patchwork fabric and simple bag-making techniques. This small structured handbag is perfect for using up fabric scraps, leftover craft cotton, or even furnishing weight fabrics.

Although this bag looks complicated, it’s actually very beginner friendly — and I guide you through every stage of the process.

In this video, you’ll learn how to:

Make patchwork fabric for a bag exterior

Create a quilt sandwich (top, batting, and lining)

Quilt bag fabric using simple straight line quilting

Add binding neatly to bag edges

Insert a zipper with zip tabs

Hand stitch a zip securely into a bag

Box the corners to create the classic Boston bag shape

Add tabs and PVC handles

Finish your bag with a handmade fabric charm

You don’t have to use patchwork — this bag works beautifully with:

Craft cotton

Scrappy quilting pieces

Fusible fleece (such as H630)

Thermolam

Leftover batting

Curtain fabric or wool

Furnishing weight cotton

I also share tips on choosing the right lining fabric (don’t skip this part — a beautiful lining makes all the difference!) and why I recommend using bag zip tape on a roll for stronger construction.

My piece of patchwork fabric measured 16 inches by 24 inches. I added binding that was 2 inches wide. You can follow the pattern and box the corners as I show.
