A short test clip showing SD vs HD digitisation of the same piece of 16mm film. The SD version was done many years ago using my original custom-built PAL system. The same film has now been re-digitised using the newly modified HD setup.
It’s interesting to see just how much more of the frame is now visible, along with the improvement in resolution (and colour).
As much as I would love a high end scanner, most archives (including this one) just dont have a spare $55k–$200k for a brand name film scanner, so not to be deterred I have created this one on a much lower budget!
It’s taken many hours, days — and honestly weeks — of experimenting, modifying and refining.
All being well, the digitisation of the TNT Channel 9 Launceston 16mm archives will begin in HD!
So far… I’m very impressed.
The only downside of HD is the dramatic increase in expense of data storage costs!
