The Supreme Court of India, in a significant ruling on pensionary rights, allowed the appeal filed by pensioners of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and other public sector insurance companies. The Court held that these pensioners are entitled to receive Dearness Relief (DR) on par with Central Government pensioners. The judgment quashed an executive Office Memorandum that had created an artificial and discriminatory classification between the two groups, holding such a distinction to be arbitrary and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution of India. The Court emphatically rejected the Union's argument of "financial constraints" as a valid ground to justify a violation of fundamental rights.
