Overview
Plan for enviro-friendly burials
Natural burial is said to be more environmentally friendly than cremation or traditional burial. (ABC News)
An invention to make burials more environmentally friendly has been invested into by Signature Funerals : a strong advocate of 'natural burial', or being put in the ground without a coffin.
We have invested into an invention to make burials more natural while still incorporating the elements of a traditional funeral.
The Biopod® is used to replace an ordinary high end casket, just by way of 4 braded ropes lowered into the ground encased in nothing but a shroud.
Signature Funerals says the result is much more environmentally friendly than cremation or coffin burials.
"It [cremation] burns tonnes of fossil fuels, generates in Australia 10 million 400,000 kilograms of co2 every year and it's completely unnecessary,"
"If you take a human being and you put it in a plastic-lined container and bury that six feet underground, you're not actually returning that body to nature, you're simply sealed away from nature and you're not going to get natural decomposition."
Political support
South Australian Independent MP Bob Such is a long time advocate of natural burial.
He says one of the great attractions, apart from cutting carbon emissions, is that unlike overcrowded traditional cemeteries with 50 or 99 year leases, once a person is in a natural burial ground, it is forever.
"Anyone else can basically have their remains dug up, and other people put on top, not necessarily your relatives," he said.
"If you can't pay the lease renewal someone else can be put in your burial plot."
"What I'm talking about is taking a piece of denuded paddock land, and we've identified some land down at Aldinga and set that up as a burial ground, begin interring people there, having burials and then gradually reforesting that area, revegetating it back to the way it should have been so what we end up creating is a permanent, natural burial ground,"
Breaking Ground
Signature Funerals has conducted the first internment in the new natural burial ground owned by the Aldinga Arts Eco Village Aldinga, south of Adelaide, on the 7th day of December 2016.
With the government support, and years of legislative development this has become the state's first stand alone Natural Burial Ground.
