Flic en Flac is one of those places in Mauritius where a single day somehow turns into a full adventure — and ours started exactly the way it should: straight into the lagoon.

This stretch of beach on the west coast is famous for its calm, shallow waters and long coral reef that acts like a natural barrier, making it one of the best snorkelling spots on the island. The water here is usually crystal clear, warm, and unbelievably blue — perfect conditions to disappear under the surface for hours.

And the lagoon did not disappoint.

Within minutes, we were surrounded by life. Bright parrotfish crunching coral, elegant Moorish idols gliding past, and colourful vagabond and threadfin butterflyfish flashing patterns as they moved through the reef. A huge shoal of yellowfin goatfish passed by like a living river, while green chromis filled the water column, constantly darting in every direction.

We spotted lagoon triggerfish, bold and curious, along with whitespotted and yellow boxfish that look like they were designed by someone having too much fun. A few pufferfish hovered calmly, pretending not to notice us, and everywhere we looked there were corals, sea urchins, and hidden movement between rocks.

One of the real surprises was the size of the sea cucumbers — some of them stretching a couple of metres long. Not the most glamorous creatures, but absolute heroes of the reef. These slow-moving giants filter sand and water, playing a huge role in keeping the lagoon healthy. Not all stars wear bright colours.

After hours in the water, we dried off and explored Flic en Flac town. It’s relaxed, friendly, and full of life — small shops, beach vibes, and the kind of place where time slows down without asking. Ice creams were non-negotiable, and walking through town with sandy feet felt exactly right.

Of course, the drone had to come out.

From above, Flic en Flac shows off perfectly — a long white beach, turquoise lagoon, reef line visible beneath the surface, and the deep blue of the open ocean beyond. Flying here gives you the full picture of why this coast is so loved.

As the sun dropped lower, we wrapped the day the best way possible: pizza for dinner, beach tired, sun happy, and already replaying everything we’d seen underwater.

Flic en Flac isn’t just a beach.
It’s a whole ecosystem, a town, a playground, and a snorkeller’s dream — all rolled into one perfect Mauritius day.
