Conservative MP Katie Lam criticised a case in which two teenage boys with a combined 10 rape convictions avoided prison and instead received £26 fines and youth rehabilitation orders.

The judge cited their age, limited understanding of consent and susceptibility to peer pressure as reasons for the sentence.

During the trial, the boys denied the allegations and attempted to portray their victims as liars. This was despite the fact that they had filmed themselves raping the girls.

Lam argued that sentences like this undermine confidence in the justice system and fail to properly punish serious offenders.

Attorney General Lord Hermer is currently reviewing the sentences as Unduly Lenient, which means they may face prison time after all.
