SCREEN TIME RULES
How much time do you spend using devices at school? Well the Victorian government has said they're going to set a limit for screen-time in classes. Yeah, screens have become a pretty big part of our daily lives, whether it's at home, or at school! But research has shown, teachers reckon too much screen time is impacting student's abilities focus and learn. And now the Victorian government has said that it's going to introduce a limit for the amount of time kids can spend on their devices at school. From 2027, students in Year 3-6 at Victorian state primary schools won't be able to spend more than 90 minutes a day on screens, and kids in prep to year 2 will have minimal access to screens. The government also says that the new rules go hand in hand with the upcoming social media ban for under 16s as well as Victoria's ban on phones in schools helping kids become less reliant on devices.
40 YEARS ULURU HANDBACK
King Charles has attended a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the hand back of Uluru. In October of 1985, after decades of calls from Indigenous leaders, the Hawke government handed the ownership of Australia's most iconic natural landmark, Uluru-Kata Tjuta back to the Anangu people. It was a huge deal for Aboriginal land rights, and today, the King attended a big event at Australia House in London to mark 40 years since the milestone where he met with Anangu Traditional Owners in his first time visiting the house as monarch.
YOUNG SEWIST
Now it's time to meet 13 year old fashion designer Olivia, who's just had her work showcased at this year's Tasmanian Fashion Festival. Sewing machine, sketches, mannequins, this definitely is the room of a fashion designer. Olivia lives in Tassie and has been sewing since she was 4 years old! And after a lot of trial and error, Oliva went making jewellery pouches to creating designer dresses. And this year at the 'Up & Coming Designer Runway', which is part of the Tasmanian Fashion Festival, Olivia was 1 of 18 junior designers to have their work showcased on the runway. While Tassie may not be thought of as a fashion hotspot just yet, Olivia hopes more events like these will help change that.
DOG FLIGHT
First up, to pets on planes. Yes, Virgin Australia has officially begun its trial of allowing pets to ride in the cabin on some domestic flights. Of course, there are quite a few rules and restrictions, mostly around size, weight, and whether or not the pets have been fully vaccinated. But for those who fit the bill, it's exciting news.
SUMO WRESTLING
Now, to the first sumo wrestling event in England in 34 years. Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese sport, where the goal is to get your opponent out of the ring. And organisers hope it'll strengthen ties between the two countries.
SHEEP RECORD
And finally to a new world record for the most sheep sheared by a woman in a day. Nikki Lyons has set the bar high, at 502 merino lambs shorn. It took her 2 and a half years of training to prepare for the big day.
