How to Communicate Effectively with Caregivers

Purposeful Aging’s moderator Dr. Christina Kadama introduced this week’s guest speaker Ms. Kitamirike, who shared insights from her experience in social care work in Uganda. The discussion covered key aspects of caregiver management, including role definition, training requirements, and the importance of maintaining respectful and clear communication channels.

Ms. Kitamirike emphasized the need to define roles, prepare care plans, and ensure proper training and support for caregivers. She discussed the differences between caregivers and nurses, noting that caregivers provide a broader range of support including physical, household, medical, emotional, and companionship assistance, while nurses focus on specific tasks such as medication and bandaging. She also stressed the need for caregivers to treat clients with dignity and respect, adapting their communication methods to suit the client's needs, whether through written notes, higher volume phone calls, or other means. Ms. Kitamirike also highlighted the need for caregivers to receive health and safety training to handle emergencies effectively.
