Old Tbilisi is less of a neighborhood and more of a living museum. It’s the soul of the city, where the scent of sulfur from ancient baths mixes with the aroma of fresh khachapuri, and where the architecture tells a 1,500-year-old story of Persian, Ottoman, and Russian influence.
Here is a breakdown of what makes Old Tbilisi so captivating:
🏛️ The Aesthetic: "The Italian Courtyard"
The signature look of the old town is defined by shaggy wooden balconies painted in turquoise, emerald, and deep red.
Winding Alleys: The streets are narrow, cobbled, and intentionally maze-like, designed to confuse invaders in centuries past.
Carved Doors: Keep an eye out for massive, ornate wooden doors; behind many of them lie "Italian
Courtyards" where neighbors share laundry lines, wine, and gossip.
Leaning Towers: You’ll find the Gabriadze Clock Tower, which looks like it was pulled straight from a fairy tale, leaning at an impossible angle.
🧖♂️ The Sulfuric Heart: Abanotubani
This is the district where the city began (legend says King Vakhtang Gorgasali chose the spot because of the hot springs).
The Domes: From above, the area looks like a series of brick beehives emerging from the ground. These are the roofs of the underground Sulfur Baths.
The Mosque: Just steps away is the Jumah Mosque, where Sunnis and Shias have historically prayed together—a testament to the city's legendary religious tolerance.
🏰 Guarding the Heights: Narikala Fortress
Towering over the district is the Narikala Fortress, established in the 4th century.
The View: It offers the iconic panoramic view of the Mtkvari River and the contrasting modern glass structures like the Bridge of Peace.
Mother of Georgia: Standing nearby is the Kartlis Deda statue. She holds a sword for enemies in one hand and a bowl of wine for friends in the other—the ultimate summary of the Georgian spirit.
🍷 The Vibe: Bohemian Decay
Old Tbilisi isn't "polished," and that's its charm. It’s a mix of:
Vine-covered terraces where you can grab a glass of local Saperavi.
Hidden Art Galleries tucked into crumbling basements.
Carpets and Antiques: Dry Bridge Market is nearby, but the streets themselves are lined with shops selling hand-woven kilims and Soviet-era curios.
A Pro Tip: Don't just stick to the main tourist path of Shardeni Street. Wander up the hills toward the Sololaki district to see the grand, slightly decaying mansions of the 19th-century oil barons
