Nicanor Abelardo - Three Pieces for the Fortepiano - III. Fantasie-Impromptu (1921) (sheet music)
Clement Acevedo (piano)
------------------
The influence of the Romantics on Abelardo is undeniable. This was particularly shown in his early instrumental works of the early 1920s, with works such as the Cavatina, Romanza, First Nocturne, and the Piano Sonata showing influences of Western composers, particularly of Chopin (He was even accused of plagiarizing Chopin on the Nocturne and Raff on the Cavatina!) Fantasia Impromptu was another piece by Abelardo with obvious romantic influences. The name may be similar Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu, but this work is vastly different compared to Chopin's.
The work is set in ABAB form with a short Coda. It starts in C minor with soft 16th note runs on the right hand and the melody on the bass, starting the piece on a dark and and mysterious tone. Afterwards the piece moves into a more lyrical section in G Major. This section features Abelardo's signature Kundiman-influenced lyricism. Then, after a short cadenza, the work goes back to the dark first section before restating the lyrical B section, this time in the parallel major of C. A short coda ends the work in the parallel major.
