Children are twice as likely to live in poverty as adults, yet they receive less social protection coverage – for example, 2 out of 3 children have no access to child or family benefits. The impacts can be devastating, with lifelong impacts on learning outcomes, growth and health.
Evidence suggests expanding coverage of child benefits is not only right for children but by addressing child poverty can contribute towards economic growth and overall well-being of societies. In the context of COVID, response and recover questions around the practicalities of universal child benefits are ever more pressing.
Building on both country experience and cross country analysis, this round table looked in detail at the pathways that countries can take to increase social protection coverage for children and families towards universality.

This is the recording of the Round Table 10: Universal child benefits: Pathways to universality, which was part of the Global e-Conference “Turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity: What´s next for Social Protection?”, hosted by socialprotection.org from 5 to 8 October 2020. In addition to providing a space to evaluate, share experiences on and learn about social protection responses to COVID-19, the event also served as a moment for reflection, allowing the community to discuss the future of social protection in a post-pandemic scenario.
