HPD Assistant Chief Megan Howard provides an update on an officer-involved shooting at 10300 East Freeway.
Preliminary information:
At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, members of HPD's Auto Theft Division and multiple Crime Suppression teams located an SUV where the occupants appeared to be scouting vehicles to steal. HPD officers followed the SUV and ended up at the above address. The suspect vehicle parked next to a new pickup truck, one man exited the SUV and within seconds both vehicles started to drive away. Officers moved in to block in the truck and SUV. The suspect in the stolen truck maneuvered an exit through the grass onto the feeder road. Officers began a vehicle pursuit. Humble Police joined the pursuit, and that suspect eventually gave up and was taken into custody. The truck was returned to its owner at the original scene.
The suspect in the SUV approached a driveway, only to be cut off by a marked HPD unit. The officer inside got out with a shotgun to take the suspect into custody. The suspect backed up and then drove directly toward the armed officer, who discharged his duty weapon twice but did not strike the suspect. The suspect jumped out of the SUV and ran across multiple lanes of traffic on the East Freeway and into a neighborhood on the other side. Officers pursued him and set up a perimeter to locate him. With the help of neighborhood citizens, that suspect was discovered inside a tool shed and taken into custody.
Anyone with information on this incident, please contact HPD Auto Theft Division at 713-308-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. This call can be made anonymously.
