Question: "What is the ruling on al-Qazaʿ? And how does it look like?"
Shaykh ʿArafāt: "As for al-Qazaʿ, as has been narrated in the ḥadīth of ibn ʿUmar and it was explained by ibn ʿUmar, it means to shave one part of the hair and leave the other part [unshaved]. To shave one part of the hair and leave the other part. This is al-Qazaʿ. And with some people, especially now amongst the muslims, it has become widespread that they don't shave. Instead, they trim (shorten) [one part of the head] and leave the other part [of the head] having more hair. For example they leave long hair on the top of the head, and on the left & right sides they also leave some hair but it's shorter (than the top). This is imitation of the disbelievers. Where did this (hairstyle) come from? From the disbelievers! Sadly. So this is not allowed, because otherwise the muslims imitate the enemies of Allāh. And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever imitates a people, he is from them." As reported in al-Musnad. And the least that can be said about this ḥadīth, is that it indicates taḥrīm (that it is ḥarām). Shaykh al-Islām ibn Taymiyyah even says that the apparent indication of this ḥadīth is takfīr, meaning: "he is from them," so he's a disbeliever. But he (ibn Taymiyyah) says after that: "But nobody from them (scholars) said this (i.e. that it means takfīr)." So the least that can be said, is that it (i.e. imitation of the disbelievers) is ḥarām. So its not allowed for you to take some of your hair and leave the other part. This is not allowed because its an imitation of the enemies of Allāh. So if you shave (one part) and leave the other, then this is the prohibited Qazaʿ."
