White Belt Yellow Tag perform 'Where Echos Land' for The Crypt Sessions

This week's Crypt Session comes from White Belt Yellow Tag.

WBYT are Justin Lockey and Craig Pilbin. Justin used to be guitarist in Geordie experimental rockers, Yourcodenameis:milo before starting a career as a producer. Working with bands like Late Of The Pier, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Enter Shakiri, he was building a tasty reputation behind the mixing desk when vocalist Craig waltzed into his studio with some song ideas. Before you could say, 'whyaye pet', the pair had teamed together and were thinking up band names. In case you were wondering, White Belt Yellow Tag was the grade Justin reached as a seven-year-old Taekwondo warrior.

Justin and Craig do all the recording between them but on stage they're joined by drummer Tom Bellamy (formerly of The Cooper Temple Clause, no less). Their music is big and cinematic and bloomin marvelous - or 'impassioned, epic soundscapes' as The Guardian described it. Radio 1 Newsbeat put it another way - 'a brooding, mechanical fuzz-rock jigsaw of pluming melody', whatever that means.

The band has been compared favourably to Elbow, Doves, Dinosaur Pile-Up and early Echo And The Bunnymen and earned Zane Lowe's vote as 'winner of Fresh Meat' back in 2008. Since then, things have been brewing nicely for the boys. They're about to head out on tour with The Automatic in March and their debut album, Methods, is all set for release on April 5th through Distiller Records.
