Villagers of Laikera Panchayat in Sundargarh district, Odisha staged a vigorous protest in heavy rain demanding the closure of a local liquor outlet (mad bhati). Protesters, including men and women, gathered soaked in rain and demonstrated **throughout the night in front of the District Collector’s Office to press their demand. They refused to leave even after intense rain persisted.

Hundreds sat in dharana (sit‑in) and raised slogans demanding that the liquor shop be shut permanently. Finally, the District Collector met the protesters and held discussions with them to resolve the issue. This movement reflects rising local resistance against alcohol sales that many believe harms community health and social life.

Such protests against liquor shops have been increasingly visible in parts of Sundargarh, where villagers, especially women, are leading demanding strict action and closure of illicit liquor outlets.
