Will increasing the Engines sump capacity reduce the oil's operating temperature? Will adding extra engine oil to the sump reduce the oil's operating temperature? Often increasing the engine oil's capacity will have very little effect on actual operating temperature, it will however have an effect on how long the oil now requires to reach operating temperature. Engine oil is designed to operate in a given temperature range meaning operating outside these parameters will often effect engine oil efficiency, engine efficiency, power and even engine emissions.
The Relationship between the working components of the engine and where the oil is stored (sump) has a large impact on the maximum operational temperatures. Changing engine sump design/material for example, switching from a pressed steel oil pan to a finned aluminium style may help radiate some of the oils heat but often a well designed oil cooler is the best option when managing engine oil temperatures.
