1924 French Grand Prix
The 1924 race attracted the most entries of any French Grand Prix of the 1920s with 22 entries. Notably, the acceptance of American designer and race driver, Harry Miller, entered by Louis Zborowski, marked the first private entry for the French Grand Prix. Giuseppe Campari driving an Alfa Romeo won the race by just over a minute from Divo with Benoist another ten minutes behind in third.
1924 Targa Florio
The Targa Florio was one of Europe’s most important races in the mid-1920s. It was created in 1906 by Vincenzo Florio, the wealthy pioneer race driver, automobile enthusiast, and founder of the Coppa Florio race in Brescia, Lombardy. The race was one of the toughest in Europe, with 3 laps equaling 277 miles (446 km) through treacherous mountain roads, made even more dangerous by severe changes in climate. Christian Werner, driving a supercharged Mercedes, won the Targa Florio in 6:32:37 hours on April 27, 1924.
1924 Italian Grand Prix
The 1924 Italian Grand Prix was held at Monza on October 19, 1924. Only four teams competed in the race in October making it a contest between Alfa Romeo and the new Mercedes. Tragically, Louis Zborowski crashed his Mercedes and was killed. Witnesses reported that he deliberately drove up into the banking rail instead of into the crowds in the infield. The rest of the Mercedes team was withdrawn and Ascari won, leading a 1-2-3-4 result for Alfa Romeo.
