Hunt’s Runs- Long Run, Seizures and Epilepsy

Описание: Hello and welcome to the 1st long form video for the Hunt’s Run’s Channel. In today’s episode, we are talking about what a seizure is, and how that relates to epilepsy. Simply, a seizure is brought about by uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. This can take a couple different forms based on where it begins and how widespread the seizure goes. A seizure can also be triggered by a variety of different methods: it can be a result of a congenital malformation which occurs during development, it could be a result of medications or drugs, they can occur as a result of a fever, from a stroke, or from a impact or collision. Due to the fact that the nature of the seizure is tied to where it begins and the regions of the brain that are involved, seizures can present in a variety of ways- from more transient loss of focus, difficulty with memory, confusion, to muscle twitches and loss of consciousness.

Epilepsy is diagnosed when someone has multiple seizure events in short period of time with no readily identifiable cause. It is one of the more common neurological conditions and impacts as many as 1 in 26 people in the United States. However, it has been my experience that people are not as aware of epilepsy, either due to not knowing what to look for, not telling others when diagnosed due to fear of stigma, or feeling uncomfortable with talking about it. If you think that either you or someone close to you might be experiencing seizures and possibly epilepsy, then you should try to track your seizure like events and possible contributing factors, and follow up with your primary healthcare physician, with possible referral to a neurologist/epilepsy specialist.
