From The De-ethanolizer into The Fuel Tank
The barrage of questions after I demonstrated my De-ethanolizer can be grouped into 4.
1. Do the octane ratings of De-ethanolized petrol drop?
2. Does the De-ethanolized petrol lose all its additives in the process?
3. Is there still water in the De-ethanolized petrol?
4. What do I do with the ethanol from the process?
The de-ethanolized petrol obviously loses some octane count. But the right question to be asked is whether it is still usable as a fuel in my motorcycles? Since official figures are unavailable and octane testing is exorbitant, I decided to do some backtrack research. which led me to the Autocar testing done on e20 fuel soon after it was launched. Putting their numbers into the volumetric formula that is readily available, I got an octane rating of 95.75 RON
Then I added some additives that I bought online to the ethanol-water mix that came out of the De-ethanolizer and found that it did not mix readily in it and form a homogenous mixture.a separate layer was seen in both the beakers. This leads me to believe that any such additives are still in the separated petrol and not in the ethanol-water or I would have seen 2 layers in it.
The extracted petrol was cloudy in the first few minutes of phase separation when extracted. thereafter the cloudiness kept decreasing. This is the water settling down in the petrol and separating itself since it is completely immiscible. I would say the complete separation takes between 24-48 hours after which the extracted petrol was completely clear. As clear as the petrol from a petrol bunker.
As for the ethanol-water that comes as a by-product of this process, I use it as a cleaner. it cleans glass really well. I also use it to clean grease, oil and dirt in my workshop. I just keep it away from rubber and plastics.
In the end what use is all this if I can’t use the resultant fuel in my vehicles?? I have now used it in my 3 motorcycles with and without octane booster with great results. more power, more mileage, less vibrations and no knocking from the engine even under load.
Before I actually poured the De-ethanolized petrol into my bikes, I made sure to check the service manuals of all the bikes for the minimum fuel octane ratings. All 3 motorcycles specified a minimum of 91 RON fuel to be used. That settled it for me as that number was much lower than the RON I calculated.
I would definitely use fuel additives for stabilizing and boosting octane if it gave me peace of mind.
Risky experiment? Maybe. After having to change the internals of 2 very expensive fuel pumps in my bikes over the last few months this year. I think it’s a no brainer. The price of freedom is spending a few hours in my garage doing this and I would gladly pay it. Every time.
