STORYLINE:
This week's violence in the northern part of Macedonia is threatening a newly agreed peace deal, which has not yet been signed.
Macedonian army helicopter gunships fired at the small ethnic Albanian village of Ljuboten on Friday following the killings of seven government soldiers.
The seven troops were killed, and nine others wounded, when two mines exploded as a convoy of trucks drove over them about 10 kilometres (six miles) north of the capital, near the villages of Ljuboten and Ljubanci.
The statement blamed ethnic "Albanian terrorists" for planting the mines.
It said the rebels fired at the convoy after the mines exploded, but caused no further injuries.
The rebels fighting in the northern part of Macedonia call themselves the National Liberation Army (NLA).
They want a new Macedonian constitution, more rights for Albanians and international mediation in the dispute.
The rebels say they are mostly Macedonian-born Albanians.
But they are opposed by the biggest ethnic Albanian political party in Macedonia who form part of the government and were on the verge of a peace deal before the latest round of violence.
