Francesco Totti, born on September 27, 1976 in Rome, is an Italian international footballer who later became a sports executive. He played as a forward or attacking midfielder for AS Roma throughout his career from 1993 to 2017. A World Cup winner in 2006, he is recognized for his exceptional longevity and absolute loyalty to his beloved Roma, playing twenty-five professional seasons for the club until he was over forty years old.
Totti is one of the most celebrated one-club men in the history of sport. An iconic captain of Roma from the age of 22 for 19 seasons, he dedicated his entire career to the club, turning down offers from the best teams in Europe. With 307 goals and 197 assists in 786 appearances, he is the club's all-time leading scorer, top assist provider, and most-capped player. With his team, he won two Coppa Italia titles, two Supercoppa Italiana titles, and a Serie A title in 2001, ending an 18-year drought for the capital club. A testament to his consistency, he led his team to a second-place finish in Serie A nine times. On the continental stage, he guided Roma to the Champions League quarterfinals twice during his career.
With the national team, he had a stellar Euro 2000, being named best player of the final despite the defeat, and earning a place in the tournament's best XI. In 2006, he became a World Champion with the Squadra Azzurra and was again selected for the tournament's best XI. The World Cup final was his last appearance in the Italian jersey. At 30 years old, a regular starter and number 10 for the national team, he decided to retire early from international football to focus exclusively on Roma.
Francesco Totti is the second-highest scorer in Serie A history with 250 goals, behind Silvio Piola, and the top scorer since the post-World War II era. The third most-capped player in the history of the Italian league, he has won the Serie A Player of the Year award twice and the Italian Player of the Year award five times. In 2007, he was awarded the European Golden Shoe, a remarkable achievement for a player not primarily known for his goalscoring prowess. He is the second-oldest goalscorer in Champions League history, after Olivier Giroud.
Totti is considered one of the best Italian players in the history of football, appearing in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players compiled by Pelé in 2004. He has received numerous awards during his career recognizing both his sporting qualities and his values, such as the Golden Foot in 2010 and the UEFA President's Award in 2017.
His game has been defined throughout his career by exceptional technique and vision. Preferring to play behind a striker, as a trequartista, he can exploit his ability to play in tight spaces, his passing ability, and his shooting prowess. More of a goalscorer than a traditional playmaker, Totti finds the net regardless of his position in the team.
