Biomechanics Terminology: Elastic & Plastic Deformation, Elastic Modulus and Elastic Strain Energy
In this 16-minute mini-lecture, I describe the concepts of elastic and plastic deformation of materials, with special emphasis on how elastic deformation prevents injury to our body's structural tissues, while plastic deformation of our body's tissues causes injuries such as partial tears and complete ruptures of tendon, ligament and fascia, cartilage tears, stress reactions and stress fractures in bone, frank fractures of bone, skin abrasions and lacerations and even osteochondral injuries of the ankle. In addition, the stress-strain behavior of biological materials is explored including the concepts of tissue stiffness and compliance and elastic modulus. Finally, the important concept of elastic strain energy and how animals and humans may utilize elastic strain energy to store potential energy and then release kinetic energy by stretching and recoil in their tendons, muscles and ligaments during locomotion to increase the metabolic efficiency of running, jumping and hopping activities is also explored.
