American troops in Vietnam carried more than their issued weapons. This video explores the privately acquired, captured, and field-modified guns they used, why they wanted them, and what they paid or traded to get them.
Getting a gun was only part of the story. Extra weight, worn parts, scarce ammunition, missing ammunition belts, and unit restrictions could make an unofficial weapon harder to keep or use. A familiar American firearm could still be unauthorized if it came through a private deal.
