This video is primarily focused on beginning to teach Yuki a down command, primarily through the use of Negative reinforcement (pops on the prong collar) Negative Punishment (non reward for breaking command) and Positive Reinforcement (using food and movement as a reward) not only to create strong, reliable and motivated obedience but also to develop authority within our relationship in the process.
It’s clear from the beginning Yukis mind is primarily focused on how to get the food from my hand and she is quite pushy but reluctant to perform a down command, which she may or may not already know to some extent. I first attempt to lure her into a down to see if she knows it and instead of laying down she does anything else but to get the food. I then switch to a more TWC oriented approach by using negative reinforcement via prong collar (the popping stops as she begins to perform the command) to put her into the correct position, from there I’m able to reward with food. Through the process Yuki starts slow, but begins to get the game of escaping and avoiding the prong collar by beating me to the command (notice the speed and enthusiasm increase from both of us) she speeds up and gains reliability and stability in quick succession. The moments of using negative reinforcement and negative punishment are BIG moments when building authority in the relationship. Watch to the end to see how Yuki does around another strange dog immediately after our session. Her lack of worry for the other dog, normally a MASSIVE trigger, is the result of both the satisfaction and positive endorphins built during the teaching of the down along with the authority built up in the process allowing me to influence her behvior far more reliably and successfully.
