316 species of birds (out of a total of 423 for Bulgaria) have been found in the Atanasovo lake area, which migrate, winter or nest in the reserve. Of these, 14 are globally endangered - curly-headed pelican, red-breasted goose, little cormorant, white-eyed grebe, meadow grebe, etc. 83 species are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria, and 170 species are of European nature conservation importance. The lake is located on the Via Pontica migration route and is of great importance for the migration of soaring birds, especially pelicans, eagles, mergansers and storks.
For more than 100 years, in addition to birds, the lake has also been used by humans to extract the valuable salt. Along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, salt extraction has centuries-old traditions dating back to the 3rd century BC. The salt pans of Atanasovsko Lake have existed since 1906.
Currently, the evaporators of "Black Sea Salts" JSC are located on the territory of the lake - owners of the lake, which produce about 40,000 tons of sea salt per year.
