Описание: This time we visit Marijampole, the center of one of the five ethnographic regions of Lithuania called Suvalkija. The seventh large city in Lithuania having 35.000 residents is in the south of the country bordering Poland.

Marijampole is a particularly important city both for Lithuanian and Jewish culture and for the revival and development of modern Lithuanian and modern Hebrew languages. The Lithuanian high school of Marijampole was a cradle for the national revival of Lithuania. Here studied such spiritual leaders of the Lithuanian nation as Jonas Basanavičius, Vincas Kudurka, Jonas Jablonskis, and many others.

In 1919 a Hebrew high school was opened in Marijampole, the first Hebrew gymnasium in the diaspora and the second in the whole world, after Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium in Tel Aviv. Among the students were poetess Dvora Baron, diplomat Abba Gefen, artist Moshe Rosenthalis, businessman Naftali Heiman and others.

In 2018, when Lithuania celebrated its 100th anniversary, Marijampole was honored with the title of the cultural capital of Lithuania.
