Dr. Stewart explains that anesthetics are very safe. Studies, however, have shown that high-dose general anesthesia in people over 60 can cause temporary, cognitive (thinking) dysfunction. The effect requires sophisticated testing, as most people can't detect it on their own, and it does go away.
Patients who have regional anesthesia can have some muscle soreness or some local injury from the needle placement. Long-term complications from this are rare, but you anesthesiologist will explain further, based on your medical history and the procedure under consideration.
Patients who have simple sedation should not expect to have any detectable long-term complications from this anesthetic. There are obviously exceptions to every rule, but the whole point here is to minimize the drugs that are given.
