How to identify a bad Distributor gear - GM V6 and V8

I followed Scotty Kilmer's excellent instructions on how to replace an oil pressure sender (link below). While I had the distributor off, I noticed excessive wear on the distributor gear. If you have the distributor off the car for any reason, check the cap and rotor as well as look for excess wear on the distributor gear.
On the distributor on my Chevy Blazer, you can see a shiny ridge-line that my pointer catches on. A shiny surface is okay. But if a pointed object (e.g. an awl) can catch at the transition between the shinyness and the blackness, then wear is excessive and you need to replace the distrubutor.
This applies to pretty much any gear mesh situation, but this particular distributor came out of a 4.3L Vortec found in many GM trucks and vans including the GMC Jimmy, Chevy S10 pickups and Blazers, full size Chevy trucks and SUVs as well as the Astro
