STORYLINE:
Armed and wearing black T-shirts, the members of a new Hamas security force patrolled the streets of Gaza for a third day on Friday.
A gunbattle erupted in Gaza City earlier on Friday between members of the Hamas force and police loyal to the Fatah party and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, police officials said.
Two police officers were shot in the legs and a Hamas gunman was wounded in the gunfire.
The violence erupted just after midnight near the Palestinian parliament building and police headquarters.
As a sign of good will and cooperation between the two sides, members of the new Hamas security force gave sweets to Palestinian policeman on their shift on Friday morning in Gaza City.
On Wednesday the government announced it was activating a Palestinian security unit made up of militants - despite President Mahmoud Abbas vetoing it.
The announcement increased tension between Hamas and Abbas' Fatah Party and came just hours after two Hamas militants were killed in mysterious drive-by shootings in Gaza.
Hours after the Hamas government announcement, the presence of Palestinian security forces out on patrol increased in Gaza City.
Abbas, who has been wrangling with Hamas over control of the security forces, demanded that the government take the new militia off the streets immediately, an Abbas adviser said.
But Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas on Thursday insisted that the new force had been established "in direct agreement with President Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas)".
