Jantar Mantar has been at the heart of India's biggest protests for decades. From Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement and farmers' protests to the wrestlers' protest and the latest political demonstrations, this historic site has become a symbol of people's right to protest.
But why has the government removed Jantar Mantar from Delhi's official list of designated protest sites? In this video, we explore the history of Jantar Mantar, from its construction in 1724 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as an astronomical observatory to its transformation into a major protest destination.
We look at the 1988 Boat Club farmers' protest, Anna Hazare's 2011 movement, the Nirbhaya protests, the 2017 NGT order, the Supreme Court's 2018 ruling, the wrestlers' protest of 2023, and the 2026 demonstrations linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The video also explains Delhi Police's decision to remove Jantar Mantar from the designated protest-site list and the alternative locations announced for demonstrations.
Does this decision change the way people can protest in Delhi? And what does it mean for the right to peaceful protest in a democracy?
Watch the full video to understand the history, legal battles, and latest controversy surrounding Jantar Mantar.
