A Brief History on JAWA/Yezdi Motorcycles!

Описание: Hey guys welcome to the another iteration of History on Motorcycles!
Today we are gonna go over the history on iconic Czech motorcycle manufacturer JAWA.

JAWA was founded in 1929 by Frantisek Janecek and is known for its legendary two-stroke engines.

The first JAWA motorcycle 500 OHV was a rebranded 500cc wanderer engine and the word JAWA was derived from first two letters of “Janecek” and “Wanderer”.

The predecessor was JAWA 175, a lightweight motorcycle with a top speed of 80km/hr.

During the 30’s, JAWA also produced number of cars and utility vehicles JAWA Minor and JAWA Minor Sodomka.

It wasn’t until 1946 when JAWA released its first dual exhaust in 250cc two-stroke motorcycle followed by a 350cc twin-cylinder motorcycle.

Two years later in 1948,
JAWA was merged with CZ motorcycles a branch of Skoda works.

In year 1952,
JAWA rolled out a new motorcycle named JAWA 500 OHC.

1960 was the year when JAWA started its operations in India. It was a technical collaboration between JAWA and Ideal Jawa.
At that time, the Indian roads were dominated by Scooters and Bullets.

To compete with Bullet, JAWA targeted its motorcycles towards youth with a tagline “Forever Bike Forever Value”.

The first motorcycle released in India was a JAWA 250 ‘A’ Type.

In 1968,
The technical collaboration between JAWA and Ideal Jawa ended and the name was changed from JAWA to Yezdi.

Later Yezdi released successful models like ‘Oilking’ and ‘Roadking’ which overtook every other bike in that period.

Other motorcycles models produced under the brand name Yezdi were: CL II, 175, 350 Twin, Classic, Deluxe and Monarch.

The company also produced variety of mopeds with two-stroke engines including JAWA 50 Jet and Yezdi 60 Colt.

The company was working on a new refined aluminium casting engine and a prototype named Yezdi 250 Supersprint but these never put into production.

Over the years JAWA released various models like; 2000 JAWA 125, 2005 and 6 JAWA 650.

JAWA Motorcycles are also known for their high strength endurance and had won 15 times World Trophy and 17 times Silver Vase Trophy in International Six Days Trial together with CZ Motorcycles.

JAWA continues to sell its iconic 350cc two-stroke twin cylinder engines

On 2016, Mahindra and Mahindra acquired the rights of JAWA Motorcycles through its subsidiary called Classic Legends.

To this day, the iconic JAWA and Yezdi motorcycles have a strong cult following for their legenday two-stroke engines and will always be owner’s pride.
