South Africa FACTS:
South Africa is located at the southern tip of the continent of Africa, borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho, and with over 60 million people, the country is the world's 23rd-most populous nation.
Known as the ‘Rainbow Nation,’ South Africa has a diverse population as witnessed by its varied cultures, customs, traditions, histories and 11 official languages. The rainbow is a fitting metaphor for contemporary South Africa. Post-apartheid, people of incredibly diverse origins, cultures, languages, and religions share the country, living side by side.
South Africa is a biodiversity hotspot, with unique biomes, plant and animal life, and covers an area of 1,221,037 square kilometers (471,445 square miles).
South Africa has three capital cities, with the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government based in Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town respectively. The largest city is Johannesburg.
South Africa has a generally temperate climate because it is surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans on three sides.
The Kruger National Park — a protected area the size of Wales — is the most famous and popular safari destination, and one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,623 km2 (7,576 sq mi) in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 km (220 mi) from north to south and 65 km (40 mi) from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza.
Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926.
To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, respectively. To the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

Learning more about a different country, its people and culture, is key to getting along with others; and is an essential ingredient in our own personal growth because we often learn that we are much more similar than we are different. Appreciating other cultures' customs and traditions helps to build sturdy bridges of understanding despite geographical differences.
