Описание:
Mastitis in cattle is an inflammation of the mammary gland, usually from a bacterial infection entering through the teat canal, causing painful, swollen udders, reduced milk yield, and poor milk quality (clots, watery milk). It's a costly disease, managed through hygiene, proper milking, antibiotics for treatment, and preventative measures like teat dipping and managing the environment, though its prevention involves complex strategies to combat bacteria from soil, manure, or other cows.
Causes & Transmission
Bacteria: Primarily Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and coliforms (like E. coli).
Entry: Bacteria invade the teat canal, often from manure, soil, bedding, or contaminated water.
Trauma: Physical injury to the udder can also trigger inflammation.
Symptoms
Clinical Mastitis (Visible): Swollen, red, hard, painful udder; clots, flakes, or blood in milk; watery milk; fever; loss of appetite.
Subclinical Mastitis (Hidden): No obvious signs, but detected via tests like the California Mastitis Test (CMT) due to increased somatic cells.
Treatment
Antibiotics: Veterinarian-prescribed antibiotics are crucial for bacterial infections.
Supportive Care: Frequent milking of the affected quarter, clean bedding, and applying ice can help.
Milk Withholding: Milk from treated cows must be withheld from the market.
