In anticipation of the International Day to End the Use of Child Soldiers on February 12, join us for a post screening discussion with General Roméo Dallaire and director Paul Gross considering the representations of children in armed conflict and the Canadian security sector in Hyena Road.
The moral dilemma professional soldiers must grapple with when faced with children used in conflict as suicide bombers, human shields and soldiers has been represented extensively in film. There is recognition by filmmakers that children represent a distinct category of victims and the representations of these encounters carries special significance. However, the use of children as weapons of war creates grey areas between when a child is a victim, a perpetrator, or both. In modern conflict, the consequences of the use of children as weapons of war is a reality that is being faced both at home and abroad.
Following a screening of Hyena Road, General Roméo Dallaire — renowned humanitarian, Founder of the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative at Dalhousie University, and National Patron of Wounded Warriors Canada — and actor and director Paul Gross will consider the representations and realities of soldiers and children in conflict and the portrayal of the Canadian security sector in Hyena Road, as well as the role of film as a change agent in exploring critical world issues. The conversation will be moderated by Stephen J. Toope.
This event is co-presented with The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative and Wounded Warriors Canada.
TIFF is pleased to offer a 20% discount on the ticket price for this event to Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans, redeemable in person at the the Steve & Rashmi Gupta Box Office or over the phone (1.888.599.8433) with valid identification.
