TRANSCRIPT AND DESCRIPTION:
[The video fades into ASLIS logo. The video fades to a bearded man standing against a light blue background. He is wearing a black long-sleeved shirt with ASLIS logo on his left arm. He begins signing:
The interpreting profession face their own occupational hazards. Here are a few examples of what that may entail: Suppose a deaf person found themselves in a misfortunate situation and an interpreter is called to interpret for the deaf person. During the time the interpreter is there, the deaf person has been injured, needs to be transported to the hospital, may be in trouble with the police, jail, court, or varies other reasons. This instance is a traumatic event for the deaf person. Sometimes, the interpreter who interprets these situations can take on that trauma as their own after they leave. Over time, they still have triggers and recall the traumatic event. Or, sometimes interpreters may feel extremely compassionate for the deaf person who is going through a difficult situation. The interpret may feel conflicted, "Should I help?" or "should I keep strong boundaries and only interpret?" Interpreters are exposed to these situation daily. That's why we are hosting this workshop, "Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue and Resilience. This will be presented by Arlyn Anderson and take place at the Deaf School [MSAD] in the Quinn Hall Auditorium. This will be on November 16th; from 10am to 5pm, with one hour lunch break. You can earn up to 0.6 Free CEUs. ASLIS and the presenter want the workshop to be a space where interpreters can openly express and share their experienced trauma. This means this workshop will not be live-streamed. We suggest you sign-up for this on-site workshop. Go ahead and register today!
